Everyone knows Thomas Hardy; the author of Far from the Madding Crowd and many other novels, and a poet. But 19th Century Dorset was the home of another poet, William Barnes who wrote his verse in the Dorset dialect.
He was also a parish priest and this was his home just outside Dorchester. There were two or three churches in his care and each Sunday throughout his long career he would walk between them to preach.
