Timeless Dorset

This was a lockdown project.

I uncovered a box of 35mm colour slides taken sometime during the late 1970s and early 1980s when I first became fascinated by photography. To read more on this project head to my blog posting.

A wild flower identification book lying in a field of wild flowers. The book had belonged to my dad and I had taken it out into a field to photograph. I think I still have the book.
The interior of Whitcombe Church, Dorset. The unnamed church was where the Dorset dialect poet William Barnes used to preach. Barnes, living in the 19th century, was fascinated by the language of the people living around him and he attempted to capture it even as it was disappearing in his poetry.
Weymouth Harbour sometime in the 1980s. Colourful fishing vessels are moored on the harbourside. Weymouth was the nearest town to where I grew up. By the time I took this photograph the building in the background was a night club where I spent most Saturday nights.
Waves rippling onto Weymouth Beach towards dusk. Weymouth is blessed witha sheltered bay that embraces the seafront. On a calm summer's evening it was and still is a tranquil place to pause.
A field of grass against a blue sky. I lived in a small village/suburb of Weymouth. In those days the garden butted onto fields and in a short walk we could be on the hills above Weymouth. I think this may have been one of the images I took then.
The Fleet at Sunset. The Fleet is an enclosed body of water behind Chesil Beach linking the "Isle" of Portland to the rest of Dorset.
A road running through the Dorset countryside showing the roadside flowers
On Portland, the dirt track to an abandoned windmill against a foreboding sky
A solitary figure stands on the rampants of Maiden Castle, an Iron Age hillfort
Looking down upon a line cottages nestling in the trees, just outside the village of Little Bredy in Dorset
Fishermans' cottages outside the village of Langton Herring in Dorset.
A ruined church stands in an ancient earthwork somewhere in north east Dorset
