To ride the South Dorset Ridgeway is to disappear back into time, from before humans lived here and the land was covered in ice to a more recent time when a young man dreamed of adventures at sea. In summer 2026, I cycled this route, exploring its history.

Easter Sunday
On Easter Sunday 2025, I cycled through West Dorset, visiting small chapels and enjoying scenic views. I explored Buckland Ripers and Abbotsbury, witnessing environmental changes from ash dieback. I admired the valley of stones and concluded with a visit to a chapel in Corton before returning home, despite the overcast weather.
Good Friday
At Easter 2023 I spent a few days cycling in Dorset, exploring a few of my favourite places in the south of the county. Here is the first of a short series of articles on the each of the rides. On Good Friday I headed out east to explore some of the county’s literary and artistic associations.
